Driving in South Africa with a foreign licence or IDP

AT A GLANCE

Your quick answers.

Which situation sounds like you?

  • Visiting with a full foreign licence: check its recognition and the documents you need before driving.
  • Moving here with an existing licence: ask whether you qualify for conversion, rather than automatically booking another test.
  • Learning for the first time: check your identity and application requirements, then follow the learner and practical-test route.

What does an international driving permit do?

An IDP translates the driving entitlement on your valid national licence. Carry the original licence as well; an IDP is not a way to start driving without one or to revive an expired licence.

DIRCO's Paris embassy guidance tells visitors with a non-English licence to arrange an IDP. Check the requirements for your issuing country before travelling. If your licence is in English, that alone is not a promise that every document or residence condition has been met.

Where do I get an IDP?

Arrange it before travelling through the recognised issuer for the country that issued your national licence. The FIA directory helps you find the right organisation and check the recognised permit formats. Follow that issuer's document, fee and delivery instructions.

A few checks before you pick up the keys

Country-specific guidance matters. For example, GOV.UK gives UK photocard and paper-licence holders different instructions. Do not apply a UK-specific time limit to every foreign licence.

  • Check that your original licence and any IDP are valid for your trip and the vehicle you plan to drive.
  • Check the photo, signature and language on your licence. Ask the licensing authority if your documents need supporting confirmation.
  • Ask your rental company about its own licence, age and experience requirements before paying.

Want a South African licence instead?

Gov.za describes conversion for permanent residents and qualifying diplomatic-permit holders. It asks for a valid foreign licence and supporting identity, residence and licence-verification documents; translation may be needed. If you qualify, its guidance describes an eye test rather than a new driving examination.

Conversion is a separate application. An IDP or TRN on its own does not make you eligible. The Western Cape page also asks for an RSA identity document. Check the document list for the province handling your application.

Just received permanent residence? Check the deadline early

The official pages do not agree: Gov.za's conversion service page says one year after permanent residence, while the Western Cape service page says five years. Both were read on 19 October 2026.

Ask your provincial licensing authority to confirm the rule and deadline for your case promptly, before relying on your foreign licence or delaying conversion. Roadbook has not resolved this official-source conflict and does not treat five years as a nationwide permission to keep driving.
